Since the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) came into effect in 2018, website visitors must expressly consent to the use of cookies in advance. This article provides you with basic information on the topic and how to incorporate it on your websites.
What are cookies?
Cookies are pieces of information that are stored as text in the visitor's web browser. This allows, for example, settings to be retained or surfing behavior to be analyzed.
Why is cookie consent required?
With the introduction of the GDPR, cookies may no longer be set without the express consent of the website visitor. Dialogs that obtain cookie consent from website visitors may not have any pre-set options.
What is a consent management platform?
A consent management platform (CMP for short) is software that you as a website operator can use to obtain and store the data protection consent of your visitors via a banner or pop-up before collecting user data through website scripts (tracking).
How can cookies be managed and controlled?
With cookie consent solutions, or consent management platforms (CMP), you can manage the use of cookies for your website. Cookies used are recorded with their purpose and displayed to website visitors for approval or rejection.
Cookie consent solutions can be used in different ways in your website project:
Plugin or standalone app: this option is used in particular for content management solutions, such as WordPress or MyWebsite Now.
External service: An external service provider supplies the infrastructure for cookie consent management. The connection to your website is established, for example, via a script that you insert into your HTML source code.
Cookie consent and IONOS products
Depending on the IONOS product you are using, there are different ways to obtain cookie consent. For example, you can use a specialized plugin in a WordPress installation or integrate the code of an external cookie consent service provider.
Below you will find an overview of the Help Center articles that describe the use of cookie consent solutions for specific IONOS products:
