For Web Hosting (tariffs from 08/29/2024)
(Customers with an older tariff can find their article here)

This article describes how to create an SFTP account to access your web space. SSH is also supported as an option.

SFTP and SSH are important tools for the secure transfer and management of files on your web space.

  • Log in to your IONOS account
  • In the title bar, click on Menu > Hosting. If you have several hosting contracts, select the desired contract.
    The Hosting page is displayed.
  • In the SFTP & SSH section, click on Set up or Manage  depending on which button is displayed. If the latter is the case, then click on Create new account.
The Create new SFTP account page is displayed.
  • Enter the desired password in the Password: field.
  • Optional: Enter a descriptive text in the Personal note: field.
  • Specify the type of account by activating the desired option:
    • SFTP: The account only supports the SFTP protocol for file management.
    • SFTP + SSH: The account also allows SSH connections to the web space.
  • Optional: Click to the right of the Directory: field on Change  field to assign a specific directory on your web space to the SFTP account. By default, the main directory / is assigned, i.e. the account has access to the entire web space; to create the account, click Save.
  • To create the account, click on Save.

The SFTP account will now be set up. This may take 1-2 minutes.

Notes
  • The user name is automatically assigned by the system and cannot be changed.
  • If an SFTP account should not have access to all directories of the web space, you can assign a specific directory to the account. In this case, however, please note that the separation and access restriction only takes place at SFTP level. In order to achieve a real separation of the web space, we recommend concluding a new, separate contract (with a new, separate web space).
