In this article, we'll show you how to create a new subdomain (Ex: mail.example.com) for your domain (Ex: example.com). Registration is not required for subdomains as they are created for existing domains. There are 10,000 subdomains available per IONOS contract. You can use them, for example, to structure your website content.
Use the following button to create a subdomain for an existing domain. After selecting a domain, you will be given the option to create the subdomain.
Please note: A previously deleted subdomain should only be recreated about 2 hours after deletion.
Log In and Create a SubdomainCreate a Subdomain
Alternatively, these step-by-step instructions will show you how to navigate your IONOS account.
- Log in to IONOS.
In the title bar, click Menu > Domains & SSL. If necessary, select the desired contract.
In the Portfolio > Quick Links section on the right, click the Create Subdomain link.
Select the domain for which you want to create a subdomain.
- Enter the name of the subdomain and finish your entry with Save. Your subdomain is created and will be available after a short time. Optional: Enable the Create another subdomain option to continue with making an additional subdomain.
Name of the Subdomain
The name of the subdomain is placed in front of the domain name and can be chosen freely. Popular subdomain names are for example shop.your-domain.com or blog.your-domain.com. It is not necessary to put an additional www in front of the subdomain name.
The version www.your-domain.com is automatically available for all of your domains and has the same usage type as the actual domain. If you want to set a different usage type, you can always create a subdomain www.your-domain.com manually and adjust it to your needs.
For more information on the structure and length of subdomains or allowed characters, please see this article.
Configuring a CNAME Record for a Subdomain
After the subdomain is created, you can configure a CNAME record for the subdomain if required.
Please note: Subdomains that contain an underscore at the beginning of the name cannot be created.
