Preparing a Domain Transfer from a Different Provider
Please use the “Print” function at the bottom of the page to create a PDF.
This article will show you how to prepare your domain with your current provider/registrar for a transfer to IONOS and how to access your authorization code. You will need this authorization code later to approve (authorize) the domain transfer on IONOS's end.
Additional Information
One of the key benefits of transferring your domain to IONOS is that any remaining time on your current registration period will be added to the registration period you choose with IONOS during the transfer process. This benefit applies to any domain extension allowed to be transferred into your IONOS account.
For example, let's say you have 3 years of registration period remaining for a domain registered with another provider, and you would like to transfer it to IONOS. If you register the domain with IONOS for another 3 years, your domain would then have a 6 year registration period.
Requirements
Depending on the domain extension (.com, .us, etc.), different requirements must be met before you can access the authorization code and transfer your domain to IONOS. Click here for an overview of all prerequisites for a successful domain transfer.
Select Your Provider
From which provider do you wish to transfer your domain to IONOS?
Is your domain registered with another provider?
If your domain is already registered with another provider, you can prepare the domain transfer as follows:
- Check that the requirements are met: Requirements for a Successful Domain Transfer
- Unlock your domain by disabling the domain transfer lock and private registration (WHOIS Privacy).
- Request your authorization code, which you will need later to authorize the transfer on IONOS's end.
- Exception for .uk domains: Start the domain transfer with IONOS and then change the registrar tag (IPS tag) with your current provider to 1AND1.
You can find detailed assistance and instructions on these topics from the customer support or documentation provided by your current provider.
If you cannot find suitable instructions among your current provider's documentation, please let us know. We will gladly create a guide for you.
