What is a Discord music bot?

Bots are digital, automated programs that act autonomously. Nowadays, chatbots, social bots, and web crawlers are a part of our everyday life online - they improve the performance of search engines, help with customer service, and serve a variety of purposes in social networking apps like Discord. Special music bots make it possible for users to play music during a chat or stream.

Discord music bots look just like normal chat users, but their only purpose is to play your favorite music. You can make playlists and choose music using searches in the form of bot commands or pasted links (i.e. to YouTube or Spotify). The bot looks for the music online and plays it in the Discord channel. If you’ve created your own Discord server, you can use a music bot to make sure that the right music is always playing for all users and/or that users can make spontaneous music requests. This makes it the ideal tool for listening parties or parallel gaming streams on a Minecraft server.

Tip

If you prefer TeamSpeak to Discord, you can also download free music bots for your TeamSpeak server or create your own.

The best free Discord music bots

There’s a wide variety of Discord music bots online. We’ll introduce you to four popular bots to help make your decision easier.

Note

Update October 2021: Due to strong opposition from YouTube (owned by Google), the popular music bots Groovy and Rythm have suspended their service. Groovy discontinued its service on August 30, 2021 and Rythm on September 15, 2021. They both intend to get up and running again at some point. Hydra and Octave no longer support YouTube as a platform.

Rythm bot

Rythm bot is the most popular Discord music bot and is used on almost 20 million servers. It retrieves music requested via bot command and song link from various online sources and then plays it on the Discord server.

Groovy bot

Due to its numerous extras and premium features, the Groovy bot is one of the most popular Discord music bots. Songs are added by users via links, then the bot retrieves the music from streaming services and creates a song queue for the listening party in the voice channel.

Hydra bot

The Hydra music bot is very user friendly and has its own channel with song requests and playlists. It’s especially well suited to Discord beginners.

Octave bot

Similar to Hydra, Octave is a slimmed down music bot with clear, beginner-friendly features for playing music.

Adding a Discord music bot: Step-by-step guide

In what follows, we’ll show you how to add a Discord music bot to your Discord server using the Hydra bot as an example. Music bots can be added to the server (or “invited”) by server owners or administrators at any time.

Step 1: Open the website for the Discord music bot you’d like to add. For the Hydra bot, the URL is “https://hydra.bot”.

Step 2: Click on “Invite” to add the music bot to your Discord server.

Step 3: Log into your Discord account.

Step 4: Grant the music bot the necessary permissions by clicking on the relevant server and then “Continue”.

Step 5: The music bot will now appear as a normal user in your channel. In the bot instructions, you’ll find the commands for activating it and playing music. In Hydra, you can enter the command “.help” to read more about the commands and features.

Tip

The recent opposition to popular Discord music bots has caused some of them to shut down. Users with programming skills can create their own Discord bots.
